Ambrosius Sales & Service, Inc. was founded in May 1953 as Ambrosius Seed and Feed store on Main Street in De Pere. It was started by Wm. Ambrosius, Sr. and his wife Marie. By their second year of business they began to sell rototiller equipment for the serious home gardener. Their son, Bill Jr., joined them in 1958. Three years later because of their growing business they purchased the property on the corner of Fourth and Reid in De Pere. At that time, they were the first to sell Ariens snowblowers in the area and also included a line of Lawn Boy lawnmowers and Ariens riding mowers.
In 1965, Bill Sr. passed away and Bill Jr and his wife Jo took over the business. One year later Bills brother Jack joined them. They renamed the store Ambrosius Sales and Service. Five years later, the seed store underwent extensive remodeling, when the warehouse next to the store was turned into an equipment showroom. The company employed six full time employees, including Bills brother Jack. Bill’s wife Jo was active in the business as the bookkeeper. In 1973, due to increasing business, the old service department was torn down and a new warehouse and service department was built. Ambrosius took on five major brands of lawn and garden equipment and prided themselves on their service. They were voted number one in service in an area newspaper survey. Although Ambrosius power equipment business had become very successful, they continued to sell seeds to farm customers as well as bulk garden seeds, grass seed, bird seed and lawn and garden products just as they did in 1953.
Throughout the 80’s the business continued to grow. In 1988, Bill and Jo’s daughter Barb and her husband Steve Nohr joined the company. As the family worked side by side, they continued to expand. Bill and Jo began to plan retirement as Steve and Barb took on the daily operations of the store. In 1990 they were recognized by the Ariens company as one of the top ten Ariens dealers in the world. As growth continued, they expanded their company to include Simplicity riding mowers, Toro lawnmowers, and also a commercial line of Gravely mowers as well as Stihl hand held power equipment. In 1997 Ambrosius Sales formed a corporation. In 2023 Bill Ambrosius Sr.’s great grandson Bryan Rottier took over the operations as the fourth generation operator.
In October of 2000 the business on the corner of Fourth and Reid was torn down to make way for the City of De Pere’s redevelopment project and was relocated to the corner of Ninth and Ashland in De Pere. Although there was a lot of uncertainty about moving a cornerstone of the community for so many years, the new location has been very beneficial for Ambrosius and the city’s redevelopment project. The new location has about 1500 sq. ft. more than the old store with a more spacious showroom and a larger service department and parts department.
The tremendous dealership loyalty that exists for Ambrosius Sales is founded in quality products and 70 years of personal customer attention. We’re in the fourth generation of sales, selling equipment to the grandchildren of our customers from 70 years ago. Service after the sale has always been the byword at Ambrosius.
